Styling with the Rule of Three: How to Create a Strong Still Life with Home Accessories

The rule of three is one of the easiest and most effective styling rules in interior design. With just three objects, you can instantly bring life to a corner, dresser, or shelf without it looking cluttered.

In this blog, I will show you how the rule of three works, why it is so effective in your interior, and I will give you concrete styling tips.

What is the rule of three?
The rule of three states that three objects together form a visually appealing group. The human brain considers three a natural, balancing number: not too few, not too many.

In practice, this means:
- Three objects with variations in height
- Three objects with variations in shape and material
- Three objects that together form a color story

This variation creates tranquility as well as dynamism.

Why is the rule of three so effective?
- Peace and balance: three items form a recognizable, balanced whole.
- Focus: the eye immediately knows where to go.
- Depth: differences in height make the arrangement feel "roomier".
- Accessibility: you don't need to buy ten items; three strong choices are often enough.

This is precisely the power of your home accessories: with a few clever combinations, you can transform an entire room more than you might think.

The core of the rule: variation in height, shape, and material
Good styling with the rule of three follows these principles:
1. Height: one tall, one medium, one short item.
2. Shape: for example, a cylindrical shape, an organic shape, and something angular.
3. Material: for example, glass, textile, and candle wax, or metal, wood, and soap.
4. Color: a calm base with one accent color, or a ton-sur-ton ensemble.

If you keep this in mind, it's difficult to create a "failed" styling.

Concrete styling with DistelRoos items
Below, I only use items you can find at DistelRoos, focusing on the typical products from Mijn Stijl and Rustik Lys: scented candles, candles, soap, textiles, and small accessories.

Style example: warm Scandinavian still life.
The three items:

1. Rustik Lys candle (tall)
One of the classic Rustik Lys stearin candles in a neutral color.
The matte texture immediately adds warmth and ambiance.
Height creates a vertical line in the arrangement.

2. Mijn Stijl scented candle in glass (medium height)
A scented candle in beautiful glass, for example, with a delightful scent like Lily Amber or Cashmere.
The glass forms the centerpiece of the still life and allows for a beautiful line.

3. Mijn Stijl soap or small care item (short)
A piece of soap lying on a dish or just a soap dish, as they are already very decorative themselves.
This concludes the arrangement in the foreground and adds depth.

How do you place these three items?
Place the Rustik Lys candle at the back, slightly to the left or right, so it defines the highest line.
Place the Mijn Stijl scented candle diagonally in front, slightly towards the center.
Place the dish at the front, on the other side of the candle, so that the three items form a triangle.

View the arrangement from the front: you see a triangle in height and shape. From every angle, you have a beautiful view of all three items.

Variation: other combinations with the rule of three
You can apply the rule of three in many ways. Here are three extra variations with Mijn Stijl and Rustik Lys products:

Three candles of different heights
- Three Rustik Lys candles of different heights.
No extra accessories needed.
This is the minimalist, Scandinavian variant: pure, calm, and very atmospheric.

Dishwashing liquid + scented candle + dish brush
- Mijn Stijl dishwashing liquid (tall)
- Mijn Stijl dish brush (medium height)
- Mijn Stijl dishcloth (short)
This works great in the kitchen on the counter.

Tips to strengthen your rule-of-three styling
Choose a color story: neutral colors with a warm undertone work very well. Think natural, beige, soft grey, warm white, and light brown.

Pay attention to spacing: items too close together = a heap. Too far apart = loose items. Three items with small gaps work best.

Stay within the style: for example, in a natural, warm, Scandinavian style. Maintain that in your styling.

Use what you already have: combine shop items with what you already have at home, such as a favorite book or a small plant arrangement.
